HVAC 101

Continuing Education Unit

An Introduction for Architects of Typical HVAC Equipment
Brother Brice Ohl

There are many types of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and equipment in use today, and new technologies continue to come online. Although HVAC systems are designed and specified by mechanical engineers, it is critical for other design and construction professionals to have a basic understanding of the types of systems and their uses. HVAC 101 will introduce more than ten types of HVAC systems, provide an overview of their applications, review the pros and cons of each, and cover the ways the systems interact with utilities and other building components.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will be able to distinguish the different types of HVAC systems in common use today.

  • Attendees will look for easy giveaways to identify HVAC systems in the field.

  • Attendees will recognize the required utilities for each type of system.

  • Attendees will understand how each type of system handles ventilation within a space.
